Statuses in ClickUp

Spaces can have different Statuses, which are the state of tasks within your Space

ClickUp has two types of statuses to choose from, and you can toggle between these options at anytime. 

Why use Custom Statuses? 

  1. Transparency! Your entire team knows what everyone is working on at any given moment. 
  2. Productivity! When you use a status such as In progress as soon as you start a task, you can stay focused on the exact task at hand, thereby increasing efficiency and productivity. 
  3. Stay Organized! With statuses, you'll know exactly where tasks stand, which tasks need attention, and what's next in the pipeline. 
  4. Use processes! Force your tasks (and team) through a process. Avoid things slipping through the cracks. 

Simple statuses

Simple statuses are for tasks that are either done or not done. Tasks with simple statuses are treated like a checklist.

When you're done with a task, you simple check it off to mark it done. 

What do Simple Statuses look like in ClickUp? 

Custom statuses

Custom Statuses are stages that tasks can go through. Basically, it's a workflow for tasks in your Space

It's important to note that tasks don't necessarily have to go through the workflow in the same order - they can jump around. 

For example, if you have a Space based around content creation, you may have something that looks like this:

  1. Ready
  2. Writing
  3. Approval
  4. Rejected
  5. Publish

By default, ClickUp has some templated Custom Statuses to choose from. When creating a Space, you'll see the above example as one of the options. 

What do Custom Statuses look like in ClickUp? 


We highly recommend using Custom Statuses in ClickUp. The reality is almost all tasks at least have three stages:

  1. Open (not started)
  2. In progress
  3. Closed (done)
