Rich text editing is available in task descriptions, comments, Docs, Chat view, and text block Dashboard widgets!

Toolbar for rich text editing

The toolbar appears when you select some text and allows you to apply rich text formatting! The exact options available will vary depending on where you are entering text in ClickUp.

The options available in task descriptions are:

  • Turn into: converts the selected text into headings, banners, code block, or a quote block

  • Bold, italics, underline, strikethrough, inline code formatting

  • Font color and highlights: select from a range of vibrant colors and highlights

  • Position: Set text to left, center, or right justified and set indentation

  • Lists: Format text as a bulleted, check, numeric, or toggle list

  • Insert a hyperlink

  • Create a subpage

  • Add a comment

  • Create a new task

  • Open the formatting settings menu

Access the formatting settings menu by clicking the ellipsis icon on the toolbar.

Options include:

  • Set the toolbar position

    • Default: the toolbar only appears above the selected text

    • Pinned: the toolbar is always displayed at the top of the task description

  • Undo/Redo

  • Insert: add a task, comment, image, divider, toggle list, table, list of tasks, button, table of contents, or embed a YouTube video

  • Clear format

  • Copy markdown: copies selected text with markdown formatting

Markdown formatting

Convert markdown to rich text formatting without leaving your keyboard. This includes your traditional formatting shortcuts as well as some custom items:

  • Headings:

    • Heading 1: # H1 text #

    • Heading 2: ## H2 text ##

    • and so on

  • Bold: *bold text*

  • Italics: _italicized text_

  • Strikethough: ~text with a line through it~

  • Bulleted list: - starts a bulleted list

  • Numbered list: 1. starts a numbered list

  • Checkbox: [] creates a simple checkbox

  • Block Quote: > starts long quote formatting

  • Inline Code: ` highlights simple text

  • Code Blocks: ``` pre-formats simple text

  • Syntax highlighting: ``` + space interprets and colors many programming languages

  • Divider: --- adds a dividing line
